Arts Integration Videos

With the integration of art, the curriculum is much richer and more learning takes place. Students are engaged and excited about learning. Reflections from students often include how they like learning with movement because they are not just reading about something, but they are telling a story with their bodies. Integrating art, especially movement, opens up doors of opportunity for student learning. As a teacher, this has become my favorite mode of teaching.

Journeys of Discovery

A Honolulu Theatre for Youth Drama Integration Residency with 4th graders at Waikiki Elementary School. Through drama and role-play, students explore Pacific Island history and grapple with the question, ‘How does survival force hard choices?’

This is a wonderful example of true integration – which includes critical thinking, collaboration, and creativity. I loved how Dan also integrated dance and responding to visual arts. The kids are obviously learning at a very high level – also developing advanced speaking and listening skills. Wish this could be in every classroom in Hawaii!

I actually decided to implement a lesson utilizing these strategies for my EES observation. I was a little nervous because I wasn’t 100% sure how my principal would feel about it, but I felt that these strategies helped target the different domains. I’m thrilled to report that my principal really enjoyed the lesson. I don’t believe that he has seen these strategies before but he was just so impressed with it all.
